Profhilo skin booster: what it does, results, risks, and whether it fits your goal

Key takeaways

Profhilo skin booster treatment is aimed at hydration and skin quality, not facial volume. Botox addresses muscle-driven wrinkles, while filler serves a structural role. Profhilo results are mixed across small studies, and any injectable treatment brings possible reactions, recovery needs, and an ongoing commitment.

What is a Profhilo skin booster?

Profhilo is an injectable treatment made with high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains water, so its most direct role is supporting moisture within the skin. It may also support collagen and elastin activity involved in firmness and elasticity, although that possibility should not be treated as a promise of a particular visible result. Research on injectable skin boosters describes these hydration and skin-quality mechanisms.

The words "skin booster Profhilo" may sound as if all skin boosters do the same thing, but the broad group includes products made from many kinds of biological material. The category name is only a starting point because the product and goal still matter.

For Profhilo, the core aim is hydrated skin and better skin quality, which is quite specific. It differs from adding shape to a cheek or easing a line caused by muscle movement, so start with the change you can name in plain words. Dry-looking skin, a movement line, and lost facial shape point to different clear treatment roles.

Choose an injectable by the change you want

When you name the change first, the choice becomes clearer. Use the matrix to match one main concern with the role each option is designed to perform for your skin and face today.

A goal-first guide matching Profhilo to hydration and skin quality, Botox to dynamic wrinkles, filler to volume and structure, skin boosters to hydration and texture, and biostimulators to gradual collagen change.

Option

Primary job

Type of change

Practical limit

Profhilo

Support hydration and skin quality

A spread-through-tissue hyaluronic acid treatment

Not mainly for adding volume or reshaping features

Botox

Relax muscles that create dynamic wrinkles

Reduced movement-related wrinkles

Does not perform Profhilo's hydration and skin-quality job

Dermal filler

Add volume, contour, structure, and definition

Structural change

Not the same treatment job as a hydration-focused skin booster

Conventional skin boosters

Focus on hydration and texture

Skin-quality change

Products may contain different biological materials

Collagen biostimulators

Support gradual collagen change

Progressive skin change over time

Not an answer to every wrinkle, volume, or skin concern

Is Profhilo better than Botox?

Neither option is better in every case. Your concern and goal should guide the choice. A line linked to muscle movement is a different problem from a wish for more hydrated skin. A wish for more facial shape points to a different job again.

One more check matters when a clinic uses the words skin booster. The label can cover products made from many types of biological material. Ask which product is planned and what treatment job it is meant to do. A category name cannot show that every booster has the same contents, action, or type of change.

What changes have Profhilo studies measured?

Chinese women treated at Week 0 and Week 4 had a clear gain in surface skin hydration over time. At Week 12, the gain was significant when compared with their starting point. Transepidermal water loss also improved over time and at Week 12. This long term means water passing out through the skin.

At one centre, the work used two treatment visits, four weeks apart, with a check at Week 12. That gives you a real time frame for the result, but Week 12 is not a promise for each person or each plan. A separate clinical paper also reports this water-loss measure after hyaluronic acid treatment.

Does Profhilo actually work?

Yes, Profhilo changed two measured signs of hydration in this group and on this schedule. The surface hydration score improved, and so did the water-loss score. That is the clearest result to keep in mind when your main concern is skin moisture.

The answer gets less certain when "work" means a clear change in wrinkles, facial volume, or the way your face looks. Those goals were measured too, but their results were not as strong. A hydration result should help you judge a hydration goal. It should not be stretched into a promise of every visible change.

Visible results and satisfaction were mixed

For the Chinese women, scores for facial volume loss, wrinkles, and a tired look went down over time. Yet the changes between each pair of time points were not significant. The women said they tolerated Profhilo well. Good tolerance is welcome, but it does not tell you how much change you will see in the mirror.

A second trial looked only at aging around the mouth. It included 12 women aged 45 to 65. One side of each face received Profhilo, which made it possible to compare the two sides. Wrinkles and pore size fell on the Profhilo side. The gain in dermal thickness was no better than saline. The women were not fully happy with the results.

The visible picture is mixed. Hydration changed in a clear way for one group, and some wrinkle and pore scores also moved in a good direction. Other face scores lacked a clear change between time points. Dermal thickness did not beat saline in the mouth-area trial, while satisfaction fell short.

Be clear about how much visible change would feel worthwhile before you commit. An aesthetic assessment should define your goal and help set expectations. Hydration and skin quality fit Profhilo's role, but added facial volume does not. A person hoping for a small skin-quality shift may judge the same course differently from someone seeking a set amount of wrinkle change.

What should you expect around the injections?

Profhilo skin booster injection points depend on the area and plan. One mouth-area trial gives a clear example: at the first session, three points were used on the upper lip and two on the lower lip, on each side of the face. Each point sat 5 mm from the inner lip lining, and the session used 1 ml.

That map was used for 12 women with aging around the mouth, so it was not a full-face map or one standard plan for each person or body area. Its value is concrete: even a small treatment area can involve several points on both sides.

Temporary effects can include red skin, mild swelling, bruises, tender spots, and small bumps where the needle went in. Mild itch or skin sensitivity can also occur. A low-key day may still include marks or bumps that you notice. That is worth weighing if even brief swelling or bruising would bother you.

You can return to light daily tasks right away. Avoid hard physical strain and sports on the first day. Avoid saunas, steamy baths, and strong sun or ultraviolet light for the first few days. These limits have different time frames, so plan the day of treatment and the few days after it with both in mind.

What are the downsides of Profhilo?

The downsides include injection reactions, rare problems, mixed visible results, and repeat care. Profhilo is an injectable. Health Canada says cosmetic injections can cause adverse reactions.

One worldwide review covered February 9, 2015, to February 8, 2018, and logged 12 reports of side effects linked with Profhilo. None was classed as serious, and postmarketing experience covered more than 40,000 treated patients.

The most common early reports were swelling, edema, redness, ecchymosis, and erythema. Later reports included swelling and nodules.

There is a key limit to those numbers: the review could not rule out missed reports of minor events. The 12 reports should not be read as a full count of every brief bruise, red patch, or swollen spot. The fact that none was classed as serious in that set also cannot prove that a serious problem is impossible.

Hyaluronic acid injections can have less common problems too, including infection, nodules, an allergic reaction, changes in skin colour, and issues with where the product sits. The chance of a side effect is one part of the choice, but the possible impact matters as well.

Set these risks beside the change you hope to see. A subtle skin-quality goal may or may not feel worth needle marks, short-term swelling, repeat visits, and the less common risks. There is no need to downplay those concerns to be a reasonable candidate. They belong in the same calm assessment as your goals.

Suitability starts with an individual assessment

Suitability is personal, so a proper aesthetic assessment has five clear jobs. It gathers your medical history, gets clear on your goals, and looks at your physical and mental readiness. It then decides whether the treatment suits you and helps set fair expectations for the result.

Each job changes part of the plan: your history gives the medical background, while your goals show whether hydration and skin quality are the result you want. Readiness includes how you feel about injections, recovery, and upkeep, and suitability and expectations bring those parts into a patient decision.

Is 60 too old for Profhilo?

Being 60 is not an automatic yes or no. Although Profhilo work has included Chinese women and people who had neck treatment, those groups do not set a personal age rule. Suitability still needs an individual assessment.

Your age can be recorded as part of that assessment. Your history, goal, physical readiness, mental readiness, and expectations still need their own answers. Ask whether the planned result matches Profhilo's role, and whether you feel ready for the visits and upkeep. Age 60 on its own cannot complete that work.

Product approval and clinical accountability in Canada

Canadian licence records can be easy to misread. A medical device establishment licence does not mean Health Canada has approved a specific device, and the Medical Devices Establishment Licence listing is not a list of specific products. An entry for a business does not settle the status of Profhilo itself.

Care and accountability are a different part of the picture. In Ontario, a doctor may pass on a controlled act through delegation, which extends the doctor's role but does not replace the doctor. The doctor stays accountable for delegated patient care under the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario policy.

You can turn both points into plain questions about the exact product, the record that shows its status in Canada, the person who will inject it, any delegated controlled act, and the doctor who remains accountable. The licence listing and Ontario rule give those questions a sound base without making claims about a clinic's own process.

Is Profhilo skin booster worth it?

Profhilo may be worth considering if hydrated, better-quality skin is your main goal. You also need to be at ease with mixed visible results and repeat care. If your main wish is less muscle-driven wrinkling or more facial shape, Botox or filler has the more relevant treatment job.

The usual commitment is more than one visit, with a common starting course of two sessions. Maintenance is often advised every six months, while results fade as the hyaluronic acid breaks down over about 6 to 12 months. This is a common pattern, not a rule that every person must follow.

Price varies from one clinic to another and can change with the treatment plan. Ask whether a quote covers one visit or the common two-session starting course, then ask how six-month maintenance affects the full cost. Weigh that answer against the 6-to-12-month fade in results and the hydration and skin-quality change you want, as well as the time and repeat visits involved.

If you are still deciding whether hydration and texture are the right targets, read our Toronto skin-booster guide to compare the broader category and its cost factors. Start there, then bring your goals and questions into an individual aesthetic assessment.

If gradual collagen change sounds closer to your goal, our biostimulator guide explains that treatment lane. Biostimulators can support change over time, but they are not an answer to every wrinkle, volume, or skin concern.
