What do before-and-after results really mean?


Before-and-after photos can show visible change, but the treatment course shapes what that change means. One group included 60 patients with moderate-to-severe atrophic facial acne scars. They had three to four fractional CO2 laser sessions, with six weeks between sessions. The final check took place six months after the last session. At that check, 26 patients had an excellent response, 15 had a good response, and 19 had a poor response. The range was wide. Some people had a strong change, while 19 still had a poor response after the full course.


In one 60-patient fractional CO2 study, three to four sessions six weeks apart led to 26 excellent, 15 good and 19 poor responses at the six-month check.

Those numbers belong to that group, that laser, and that course. They show how much the response can vary even when patients follow the same session schedule. The six-month check gives a set point for the result, but it cannot answer whether the change was permanent.


This range of responses is more useful than one standout photo. It leaves room for a strong change, but it also shows that a poor response can follow the same three-to-four-session course. That uncertainty is part of deciding whether the time and healing period feel worthwhile. It also keeps the goal centred on possible improvement instead of a promised finish line.


Among 397 patients in Bangkok, finishing at least three fractional laser or fractional radiofrequency sessions was linked with more clinical improvement. That link does not promise a set result after three sessions. It describes what was seen in that group.


The most helpful progress photo is one you can place in context. The laser type, session count, spacing, and date of the last check all affect what the photo represents. Without that frame, the image has less value for your own choice.


Is laser for acne scars worth it?


Laser may be worth considering when the chance of visible improvement fits your scar type and the risks and healing time feel acceptable. The answer is personal because results depend on clinical skill, careful patient selection, and exact control of device settings. A device name alone cannot settle the choice.


Skin tone is one part of that balance. After CO2 laser resurfacing, the risk of darker or lighter skin is higher in Fitzpatrick skin types III to VI than in types I and II. The clinical terms are hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. A higher group risk does not predict one person's result, but it matters when weighing the treatment.


Healing also changes with the resurfacing approach. Conventional full-face CO2 resurfacing has a significant risk of side effects and a long recovery, while fractional resurfacing has a more rapid recovery and fewer side effects. This comparison applies to those two approaches, so it cannot set one healing time for all lasers.


Laser procedures also have potential complications. These include retinal or corneal injury, skin burns, changes in pigmentation, and infection after treatment. Because outcomes depend on experience, patient selection, and precise device settings, the treatment decision involves more than choosing the deepest or strongest option.


CO2 and Er:YAG lasers also have a clear tradeoff. CO2 reaches more deeply and may improve severe scars more. Er:YAG is gentler and has a lower risk of dark marks after treatment. The better fit depends on which of those traits matters for the scars and skin being treated.


For Fitzpatrick skin types III to VI, the higher chance of darker or lighter skin after CO2 resurfacing adds weight to the skin-tone part of the choice. What should you watch during healing?


Redness and crusting were the most common side effects in the 60-patient fractional CO2 group, and both were short-lived. Three patients in the same group developed dark marks after inflammation that lasted eight to twelve weeks. That time frame describes those three cases, not every person's healing time.


Healing time can also be a warning sign in a defined resurfacing setting. After fractional resurfacing, healing that takes longer than three or four days with a nonablative device, or longer than one month with ablative resurfacing, may indicate a latent infection. The threshold changes with the type of device. One timeline should not be applied to both.


Crusting needs a simple boundary: do not scratch or pick crusting skin after laser resurfacing. Picking can cause scarring or infection. This instruction concerns crusting skin. It does not create an extra list of aftercare rules that were not part of the evidence for this page.


Other possible problems include infection after treatment, burns, changes in skin colour, and injury to the eye. The common short-lived effects in one group do not cancel these more serious risks. Healing is part of the treatment choice from the start.
